[Madlug] File transfer from ssh session?

All,
I'm trying to figure out how to put and get files from within an ssh
session. When I'm working on a remote server, and I want to handle a
file locally, I'd like to be able to give a command in that shell and
have the file pop out in some default place, or perhaps ssh's current
directory on the local machine.
(It'd be even better to be able to copy whole trees cleanly, a la rsync,
but that can be built from a simpler tool. Similarly, it'd be nice to be
able to specify the target directory, but that's not a big deal.)
I know the basics of rsync and scp and sftp, but when I'm behind NAT
(and I'm /always/ behind NAT) these require that I fire up another local
terminal, and reenter the server and path where the wanted remote file
lives. This is only a mild inconvenience, sure, but it bugs me. :j
Any ideas?
