Hi Jack,
if speed is not an issue, I would consider using the
WD mybook world edition as a server:

I bought one myself last year 500GB $200. It runs a
some very basic Linux and comes with all tools, gcc, make, ...
so that you can compile things on it. One mine I compiled
from source PostgreSQL, Python, and some other things.
It has the lighttpd web server installed by default because
this is used for the default web interface. The nice thing
is that it is small and does not use a lot of power.
But the ARM processor is slow, only 266MHz and only 32MB,
plenty of HD space, however.
