So if providing last mile connections is so unprofitable, why do the ISPs do it? What's in it for them?

Also, if companies here are taking a loss on this business, how is it that providers in other countries are able to offer faster and cheaper service? (Besides the fact that some of those places have much more compact populations that could make network service cheaper to provide.)

I'm not grilling you, I'm just curious for some more answers since the topic came up.
