[Madlug] OT: Cable Modems

My old cable modem, a Motorola 5100 is hanging up every couple of days.
It was doing this at my previous location too, so I think it's on the
way out, instead of some issue with Charter. (Basically, all light go
steady.)

Two questions:

1) Is there any troubleshooting that you can suggest? There is no
firmware on the Motorola site, so it appears that my options are
somewhat limited, unless you know of any tricks.

2) If I get a new modem, I would like to get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
Specifically, the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband
Cable Modem. Even though we don't have DOCSIS 3.0 right now, it's
probably a good investment in the future. The trouble is, this modem is
not on the approved modem list for Charter. Anyone know if it
will/should work?
