[Madlug] Connecting smbclient to a Samba server

Dear madlug list:

I am trying to connect my laptop to a printer through a Samba server.
To test the connection, I run

 smbclient -L <machine> -U panike

and then enter my password.

smbclient then says:

Server requested plaintext password but 'client plaintext auth' is disabled
tree connect failed: SUCCESS - 0

This message seems to say that something is misconfigured at the
server side, but the system administrator maintains that my client is
misbehaving. Is there anything I can do on my (client) side to fix
this? Is there anything I should tell the SA to look for on his side?
The client is version 3.2.3 of smbclient and the server is Samba
3.2.5. I am connecting through a firewall but I do not believe this
is the problem.
